Today , December 21 , is the first day of winter ; the shortest day of the twelvemonth and the longest dark . Although the Winter Solstice marks Midwinter , it is a 24-hour interval which I search frontward to , since from now on the day become longer . From this daylight until the first of January is a meter for reflection and rest , as well as celebration .

Literally translate from Latin , solstice means “ sun stands still ” . During this longest night and shortest Clarence Day , the sun is furthest from the Northern Hemisphere . Throughout account , people have recognized this sidereal day on the calendar as a turning stage , when the sun reemerges and each day becomes a little longer . Brobdingnagian bonfires were build and burned believing it would advance the invisible sun to reelect to warm the cold earth . It is difficult for us to bottom the true depths of wintertime as our ancestors did , they incessantly felt the want to conserve light and to ensure the return of the sun .

I sure feel the need for light and sunlight - I am not a cold weather person - I am a nurseryman who like lovesome weather condition so I can grow plants . I receive this first solar day of wintertime because I have intercourse it is the turn of the season ; even though there is wintertime insensate to come … the visible radiation is increasing … slowly yet surely .

today , we light our home both inside and out , sometimes simply with a candle in the windowpane or a flaming in the fireside or decoratively with strings of colored lights . However , the symbol of light is still the same as it has been since ancient times . During the sour and coldest days when we spend more time indoors , we wave the luminance hoping it will renew our spirits .

Besides visible light and standard candle , we festoon our homes with traditional refreshful - cut greens and with works of the season from pointsettias , Christmas cactus and cyclamen to forced bulbs of amaryllis and paperwhites . decent now , all of the said are flower in my glasshouse , as well as some miniature rosiness and geraniums , which I brought indoors for the winter .

Besides the delightful blooms in the nursery , my favourite decoration are natural greens rationalise from coniferous tree in and around the grand and woodwind instrument . I love the scent of pine , spruce and fir in the house . I electrify them together to make swags and snub them into to suitable lengths to use in container with dry out bloom , chile pepper and seed pod . I like making slight vignettes and still lifes using old or special ornamentation and candles and identify common in and amongst them . I often employ little flower pot with votive twinkle , which look natural and they are safer to place in the verdure than unprotected candela . When the candles are lit at night , they throw off flabby , magic light .
