Today we ’re claver with Dawnn McWatters .
I ’ve been subscribing to ( or buying ) your powder magazine for many years as an amateur gardener . In 2019 I step up my game , entrust a healthcare vocation , and became a Master Gardener . This class I ’m launching a nonprofit food literacy and therapeutical gardening instruction programme called The SAVOR Project .
I ’m place photo from what we affectionately call our “ sloughy bottom garden ” here on the outskirts of Portland , Oregon . After fencing in the garden secret plan to keep out our chickens and dog , I see that it was locate in a frost pocket ( oops ! ) . provoke bed help me with the piddle retention at the bottom of our south - facing side , but they did n’t save me from five years of shlepping everything up and down at the end of a weed sitting . unhappily , after a serious car accident on our busy country road and some landscaping - related injuries , we ’ll be selling our attribute this summertime , but I depend forrad to gardening in community again on an itty itsy-bitsy urban plot and sharing what I ’ve instruct with my neighbors .

It ’s hard to pick my favorite plant or garden picture ( like endeavor to clean between children ! ) . Here are a twosome that tolerate out . Sunflowers are a sweet connectedness to my immigrant keen - grandad ’s Ukrainian roots , and last yr I plant my first - ever helianthus secret plan with a fistful of varieties .
Also , over the retiring couple of years , I ’ve teach myself how to makeshakshukaas I ’ve reconnected with my long - lost Jewish roots , and last summer I was capable to expend Black , a Russian heirloom tomato plant , that I ’ve grown in my own garden . It feel like I ’ve come full rophy . I told one of my Master Gardener co-worker of late that although I ended up with bushel of unripe , dark-green heirloom tomatoes last fall , it was my big output yet , and I had many sizeable plant that thrive ( but just ran out of heat units in our wooded plot ) . I ’m pretty proud ! perhaps it was a failure , but it was also a winner in my eyes , and I have elbow room to grow for the future .
