Your plant recommendations from expert plantsman, Michael.

Gesneriad . No , I ’m not sneeze , I ’m telling you about a plant you might not have heard of . Although you probably have . The Gesneriad crime syndicate boast many old favourites- from Streptocarpus to Saintpualia and I ’m advocate them as the perfect room to lift those wintertime vapours .

gesneriad come in almost every colour of the rainbow , and are easy to grow ( as long as you do n’t overwater them . ) fathom like the stark houseplant ! They were very democratic in the 80 ’s , and I remember diffuse many with my granny . But , somehow , they fell out of party favor whilst everyone drool over Calathea , Anthuriums and all the showy leaf plants .

Well , just like rigorously Come Dancing , Kate Bush cut across , and lycra , Gesneriads are have a longsighted delinquent revival in 2024 . And when you believe of Gesneriads , there ’s only one place to go for variety and expertness , and that is Dibleys in North Wales .

The revival of an old favourite

Here ’s the pick of their harvest for this season :

Streptocarpus ‘ Crystal Dawn ’

year ago , breeding programmes resulted in an regalia of available colours and forms . However , flowering performance was sometimes lacking until the arrival of the ‘ Crystal Ice ’ Series . Launched to great fanfare at a January RHS show , this absolute smasher will bloom all yr around .

The consummate married couple of genetic science , ‘ Crystal Dawn ’ is a pinkish extract , with slender , somewhat more tidy , foliage than some of its siblings . The flowers are also a little slimmer , with the feeling of a foxglove , with gorgeous marking . An splendid plant for a position in filtered luminance ( i.e. your dining table ) , which could easily outflower a Phalaenopsis … awkward … !

Kohleria ‘ Strawberry Fields ’

I am so in erotic love with the flowers of this plant . ‘ Strawberry Fields ’ is a newish loan-blend which flower from May to October , which offers fantastic value .

All section of Kohleria are fuzzy . Plants can become grandiloquent and gangly , but a little prune here and there can advance a better pattern . Again , keep in burnished collateral light , water only when dry and feed to help see to it you the best of the blooms .

Saintpaulia ‘ Nitida ’

I have such fond memory of my grandma ’s African Violets on the windowsill , and it was in all probability one of the first plants I experienced propagation with . They ’ve been omnipresent in home up and down the land for many old age , but have you ever see one as small and cunning as ‘ Nitida ’ ?

I am a huge fan of the anil blue flower and world-wide ‘ botanical show ’ of Nitida , and it makes me want to plant up an indoor fairy garden , just because .

Achimenes ‘ Veronika Gotmanova ’

A Mexican plant which usually grows in forests midway up a mountain , Achimenes may be more intimate to you as the ‘ Hot Water Plant ’ . But please go for elbow room temperature water only .

‘ Veronika Gotmanova ’ is a wild mixed bag , with as much flower power as a Petunia . crimson pinkish heyday clothe the stems from former spring to fall . Plants can be a little bit lax , so might appreciate reenforcement , or why not try growing them in basket .

Petrocosmea crossbreed

Now here ’s something quite new , but which has become very chop-chop popular . A Chinese aborigine , which creates a felted little potato of leaf . Bunches of flower are also produced – but during the winter time . Quite a hardy plant life , often grown as an alpine , so will be quite happy in the cool elbow room of your home plate ! You ’ll find them quite collectable once you get started .

Alsobia dianthiflora

usher in the netlike fantasy that is Alsobia dianthiflora ! A quirky Gesneriad with scalloped , felt leafage . In fact , I lately point out it for sale strictly as a leaf plant life when I was over in The Netherlands .

The flowers are stunning . It works well as a show in basket or wall planters .
