Last calendar month was pretty much a whirlwind for us . We had 13 lambs in six daylight from seven Ewe !

All the birth went well . No problems arose that want interference . I have read that about 20 percentage of all lamb deaths happen in the first 10 day of lifetime , so I reckon this is such a crucial time in the lamb ’s life history .

We did have one case of a ewe have triplets and disapprove one of her lamb for the most part . This trivial ewe lamb was smaller than her two brothers . But she was ( and is ) middling scrappy .

She nursed a small the first few days , and I supplemented with colostrum and then with lamb milk replacer .

Family Time

After each of the ewe gave birth , I gave them some bonding time with their raw Lamb before stop each teat to make trusted that milk / colostrum was flowing .

In most display case , a sheepherder can ask everything to go swimmingly . But sometimes , a waxy sparking plug ( that has forbid bacterium from bewilder into the udder during maternity ) is n’t dislodged by the lamb breast feeding after nascence .

In that case , you ’ll need to help . Just milk the teat to withdraw the plug so the lamb can nurse .

Colostrum Is Critical

When a lamb is born , it does n’t have its own antibody . The colostrum provides those significant protections .

Vaccination

Our lilliputian bottle lamb has already had a couple ofCD&T shotsto give her the auspices that she did not get from mother ’s milk .

I was lucky to be able to leave her out with the rest period of the Ewe and lambs so that she could have their company as she grew up . I also saw her pilfer a few sip here and there from various Ewe !

The respite of the lamb will get their first vaccine next week .

Mind the Mothers

As for the Ewe , they require some special TLC after giving birth as well . birth makes ewes very thirsty , so I insure they have batch of water aright after birth .

I do n’t usually feed them hay or grain right away so that they can focalise on bonding with their lamb(s ) . But in the daylight after , I verify each ewe has plenty of metric grain and high - quality hay . This way , she can produce a salutary amount of Milk River for her lambs .

It ’s really fun watching the lambs grow and change . In just a few short hebdomad they have gone from only needing milk from the ewes to becoming capital forager on the hay , skunk and feed that their mother also eat on .

Summer Cut

We also finished shearing the ewes now that their lamb are about a month old . My husband and I do our own shearing – which is n’t easy , and the results are not as beautiful as a professional Moira Shearer .

However , with temperatures predicted to be in the high 80s this hebdomad , I ’m really happy we were able to get everyone sheared . You do n’t recognise how hot that wool is until you are shearing and can draw away the sheared fleece . It ’s quite warm next to the skin ! !

We ’re quick for the approaching tender month of summertime and look forward to the change in our ever - growing wad !
