My kinfolk and I have kept chicken for a figure of years . It was n’t long after my married woman and I started gardening with zest about a decade ago that we decided to purchase a quartette of Golden Buff frier fromMeyer Hatchery . We added these okay Lady to our corner - lot suburban grow space and bask both their eggs and the amusement they provided .
About a year later , we were living on a farm in central Kentucky with Berkshire pigs , Dexter oxen and a whole mess of chickens — layers and meat birds . But that ’s a narration for another time .
The point is , we ’re no bounce chicken when it amount to keeping … er , chickens . We ’ve moved off the farm in recent old age , to another suburban plot we ’ve filled with flowers , fruits and veggies . Also , we have six Australorps in a healthy backyard run .

Some things never change . But have chickens around is fun , fill and — even evoke thousands of birds — educational .
But I do n’t tend to baffle my Bronx cheer . My wife and kids might disagree with this claim ( the hens have a heckin ’ swank handbuilt henhouse , a swing , deluxe birdfeeder , plenitude of toys , etc . ) , but compared to some keepers , I ’m fairly bare bones . I take care of my chickens so they continue to take care of breakfast .
But they do n’t come into the menage and watch boob tube with us or anything .

Treat Time!
To make up for their confined life in a well - maintained run ( we have a lot of hawks , so free - ranging is a no - go ) , I do offer my hens the periodic fistful of dim soldier vanish larvae . And when we knead in the garden on the weekends , they know to expect armloads of greens and the casual wriggly bug .
Our Australorps might turn over me stingy with the poulet treats , though . So when I was get hold of by the people atCoopCrate , offering a brushup loge of their mathematical product , I was fascinate . With a few of our ladies undergo a grueling hard molt , now could be the exact right time to spoil the flock with a few extra somethings .
