A gardener embraces the wildlife that visit her garden, and creates a haven from the heat in the process

Hi GPODers !

Yesterday we saw the flowers that beat the high temperature in Maxine Brisport ’s garden ( if you neglect it , check that out here ) and today we get to see the critters that also got some heat relief thanks to Maxine ’s wildlife - friendly plantings . While we wo n’t be talk as much about plants in this Garden Photo of the Day post , Maxine reminds us that garden are n’t just about plant life .

This was a strange year in our garden . We had to develop a symbiotic relationship with a smorgasbord of wildlife on a everyday foundation . Our latest visitor was a turtle , who would show off his recollective neck from a space , before quickly retreating as we got closer .

It is obvious ( while only slenderly intentional ) we have create a garden that attracts bee , insects , butterfly and small beast . Overall , we are felicitous that we have our own wildlife favorable garden . We are especially pleased that our garden was a harbour for many modest animals during the heatwave .

Maxine ’s modish garden client , a snapping turtleneck enjoying the shade of an old tree podium . Love that Maxine saw the stump as the perfect base for a potted plant — made this turtle ’s shady spot that much more fashionable !

A swallowtail butterfly chaffer some summer allium with some ‘ Mellow Yellows ’ coneflower ( Echinaceapurpurea‘Mellow Yellows ’ , Zones 4–8 ) that looks like it has been chaffer by a thirsty garden invitee as well .

A cardinal visit one of Maxine ’s many doll feeders . Cardinals , aside from just being sensational birds , hold raft of different meanings and are very symbolic in various cultures and religion . Whether or not your believe redbird signify good fortune , symbolise spiritual substance , or carry news both safe and bad , they are wonderful to spot in the garden .

A downy woodpecker is an equally beautiful bird sighting , but sometimes not without case for concern . As trees are more and more taken down and their habitat reduce , pecker have taken a liking to the wood siding of nursing home and can do some serious hurt . But I ’m guessing with Maxine ’s lush landscape painting and teemingness of food she supplies , she does n’t have to worry about that .

Another garden client that can get interracial reactions … this squirrel is doing some stunt flying to get at Maxine ’s bird feeder .

While often overlooked , fly are also crucial pollinators ! While many are n’t as effective as bees , some — like this one visiting Maxine ’s vulgar boneset ( Eupatoriumperfoliatum , Zones 4–8)—have a bit of blurriness that make them better at gather up pollen .

Like the savvy snapping turtle , a chipmunk takes advantage of all the shady spots in Maxine ’s garden .

Two more downy woodpecker taste another one of Maxine ’s bird feeders . Unlike their male counterpart above , female downy woodpeckers do n’t get that distinctive pa of red plume on their heads .

Another underrated pollinator , moth are important for pollinating many flora ( particularly the rarefied blossom that flower at Nox ) . The can also be stunning insects , with various colouring material and patterns like this hummingbird clearwing .

in conclusion , the epitome of eco - favorable gardening : A native bee ( brown belted humblebee ) enjoy some nativeJoe Pye weed(Eutrochium purpureum , Zones 3–9 ) .

give thanks you for sharing your beautiful , wildlife - fulfill garden with us again , Maxine ! It ’s always a pleasure to see who ’s visiting and what ’s growing !
