You might have understand about our new chicken in aprevious spot . We are really enjoying them , but to our surprisal , one of our ladies has grown up to be a man ! He ’s a beautiful Rhode Island Red cock that has taken nicely to his little harem of hens . The trouble is , he ’s startle to get a bit fast-growing , and we ’ve discovered that cock and preschoolers do n’t mingle .
I do n’t mind him move into someone ’s soup smoke , but I ’d much prefer he encounter a decent home somewhere where he can ‘ cockadoodledoo ’ to his sum ’s content and not see red the neighbors . We inhabit too close here . When we informed our neighbors about our new kinsperson member , we kindly mentioned that they should n’t concern about haphazardness because “ there will be no roosters . ” So now we are try on urgently to find another locale for our gent .
I ask two farmer friends to take him in , and both kindly declined . I have since moved on to require Friend of friends with hens , telling them how cute footling child chicks are and how much fun it is to breed your own chickens . I do n’t think I ’m very convincing .

I might soon have to move on to ask random citizenry walk the aisles at our farmer ’s market . “ Psst ! Hey buddy , need a cock ? ” Then I ’ll carry on to pull him out from under my crownwork and render to hand him off . Or peradventure I should just wait for a car with an open window to stop on our corner . ( I ’m reminded of a certain “ Seinfeld ” installment … Remember “ little Jerry ” ? )
Anyway , if you know anyone in western Pennsylvania who is in need of a overnice , racy Rhode Island Red , please , please institutionalize them my means !
On a whole different banknote , the atmospheric condition here is really set out to cool off and I ’ve already begin some cooking for the winter . I covered our small pool and waterfall with a sheet of netting to keep the leaves out , and we ’re planning to pack aside the patio article of furniture sometime this weekend .

The tomatoes have been rend out ( they did finally yield to the late blight that plagued nurseryman up and down the East Coast ) , the cuke vines have hit the compost bin , and the courgette have been pulled from the soil , even though they were still produce ( much to my humiliation ) . I have n’t picked our demon pumpkin yet but it is completely colored up now and will look adorable on our front porch .
Other weekend chores will include reseeding some simple spots in the lawn , pulling out the plethora of pass calendula plant life in the front garden , harvesting prickly-seeded spinach , digging up and dividing some of my fanatic Nepeta ( catnip ) plants , and moving my rosemary plant indoors . It sound like a meddlesome weekend onwards . Now if I could just get that rooster to help …
