When Jesse and Jennifer Menden bought their first house in Buffalo , it did not have a garden . “ It was a vacuous slate , ” says Jesse . “ We love starting from scratch ! ”

Jennifer is the designer , always wanting to add another decorative plant . Jesse concenter on vegetables — a longtime rage — and likes things neat . The couple ’s unlike glide slope sometimes put them at betting odds with each other , Jesse says . “ But we tally that we willhavea garden — that is always a yes . ”

Their first domicile was on a large property with plenty of space to grow . Jennifer embed petunias , moss roses , begonias , hydrangeas , peonies and a variety of bush . Jesse ’s vegetable garden had just about everything in it , and he put up a big fence to keep out the critters . One day he came out to the garden and found three rabbits and two squirrels pick away . “ Yep , you ’re get by with the forces of nature in malice of best feat , ” he says .

The couple both grew up with nurseryman . While Jesse ’s parent always had a vegetable garden , his grandmother ’s garden was perfect . “ You could never discover a single weed , ” he say , “ so it was something to aspire to . ”

Jennifer ’s grandmother , Alta Mae Asplund , is alifetime fellow member of MSHSand start blossom gardening at the historic period of six . “ My mother always articulate that we would n’t have had any flower in the garden , if it was n’t for me , ” says Alta Mae . Now 88 , Alta Mae is excited to see her gardening bequest passed on to her grandchild . In February , she bought four years ’ worth of natural endowment memberships for Jesse ’s birthday .

Now in their 30 , Jesse and Jennifer are go in Chanhassen on a much smaller property with a hill in the back . They are planning to put in apollinator gardenon the J. J. Hill . “ We have a neighbour with Bee Safe signs in her yard , so we are going to follow her instance , ” Jesse says .

When the couple moved to the property in 2019 , they joined theMinnesota Landscape Arboretumright forth and say that they really revel the visit for aspiration .
