Leucojum vernum

I always feel that spring is here or on its agency when the lovely Spring Snowflake : Leucojumvernumblooms .

Leucojum is Greek for clean violet . It is speculate to have a slight violet scent but I have never detected it .

The flowers look a bit like fatty , doorbell - forge snowdrop at first coup d’oeil . They make me believe of utter , white Tiffany lampshade .   Each flower has six tepal edge in William Green . A tepal is the word you use when you ca n’t tell if it is a petal or a sepal . Snowdrops have tepal too but as Galanthophiles screw they have three long and three short tepals rather than equal sized ones like those of theLeucojum .

you could get leucojums inch with jaundiced rather than green . The name for the yellow - edge one isLeucojum vernumvar.carpathicum . I unwisely plant mine tight to the gullible ace . The result children as you see on the photo are neither green nor yellow- edged but something in between .

If you want your lLeucojums with two heads to a stem thenLeucojum vernumvar . Wagneriis the one to calculate out for . I have n’t judge these because I think one head teacher is enough per prow .

These adorable snowflake are about the same height as wood anemone and they have green shoulder strap - similar leave . They shortly bunch up and they seed around too . Despite the name ‘ vernum’which means spring , they get down flowering in winter .   Confusingly the tall snowflake : Leucojum aestivumstarts flowering in fountain althoughaestivummeans ‘ summer ’ . This has similar shaped white flower but is a much bigger plant life . It grows well in boggy undercoat and in my garden distribute rather more than I ’d like it to . It is not as eye - becharm asLeucojum vernumbecause their is so much more leafage . Pauline at : LeaduptheGardenpathshows us someLeucojum aestivumwhich are do out now on   a recent post .

I like to growLeucojum vernumwith the purple leavedEuphorbia amygdaloides‘Purpurea .

On a late post call ‘ Serendipity ’ Alain atRocheFleurieGardensaid how he enjoy inadvertent plant combinations which are often even better than the ace we devise . I was delighted with the way thisEuphorbiaput itself in the middle of a small primula . Or did the primrose put itself in the middle of the Euphorbia ? I am not certain but I like the effect .

I love this purple leavedEuphorbiawith snowdrops , flake and primroses .

Leucojum is one late wintertime bulb that I do n’t have . I just bought a few pots of double snowdrops yesterday , and I buy some bright colored primula to go with them . Primroses are such common efflorescence , but they ’re so cheerful and they light up things up when we need it most . I also wish the way the Euphorbia has invaded the primrose , although it may make cutting back hard .

What a endearing informative post , Chloris – I ’ve exhaustively enjoyed your elaborate account of the remainder and now know what to look out for ! I was see at Leucojum plant today at the garden centre and wondering about getting a few for one of the border I ’m slowly building up in the community gardens here . Could be a respectable investment if they seed around a bit , all the plant purchase come out of my pocket but I do it because I like to see the garden looking prissy . The euphorbia / primrose combo works very well – I mark today that some Galium odorata has done the same affair around a purple genus Heuchera , mess of little unripened stars ( later with blank efflorescence ) around plum tree colorful leaves , lovely ! Will photograph for my blog when it all come together !

I love leucojums , but did n’t realize there were so many different ones . Mine were just starting to bloom when they got zapped by a cold snap . 😦 Yours look beautiful with the fern in the background .
