Settle down , it ’s not what you call back . Or maybe it is . Either way , as the conditions turns from balmy to gnarly and a trip to the garden on a cold showery twenty-four hours sounds about as sympathetic as a sharp joint to the eye , it ’s nice to have some of the oft used veggie andherbsclose at helping hand . Enter the wad garden .
Yes , I ’m blab out about a mini - veggie garden in containers , on the porch or just outside the back doorway . When I just demand a quick fistful of rosemary or a little turn of lettuce , it ’s much less daunting to have them in a place where I can dart out between the raindrops and snaffle what I take .

I ’m couch a few kinds of lettuce and some sage , rosemary and thyme into pot this crepuscule and winter . As an experimentation , I ’m also potting a few Brussels germinate jump . Any of the perennials that make it until outflow will make a place in the “ substantial ” garden . Until then , I have a wine - barrel plantation owner outside the back room access and a few miscellaneous pots in among the decorative plants on the front porch .
In all honesty , if you pursue the traditional “ a thrill , a spill and a fill ” method acting of filling a decorative planter , a few colorful types of romaine or a Brussels sprout works can bring home the bacon the boot , thyme is a enceinte release , and parsley , sage , rosemary or more compact moolah fit the filling bill . So not only are some of my favorite within snaffle distance , but they really correspond right in with the glamour girls adorn my pack of cards and porch . They actually lookbetterthan my straggly summer container garden plant right now because they ’re freshly planted and vigorous , whereas some of the others — yearly , mostly — are getting a bit feeble .
I really like having alotofsageon hand because I use it dried as well as refreshful ; likewise , thyme and oregano , so they will always have a place in the Fortress Garden , but having a few in the Fortress Garden Pot Annex lets me hug my lazy , wimpish side . Sounds like a winnings - win to me !

Kale , chard and spinach are also dependable contenders for container veggie garden , but we plough through those kind of super C in such massive quantity , it ’s not really hardheaded for us . It ’s not unusual for me to eat up kale at every repast . Trying to keep up with thekale demandin our household would have in mind we ’d have about 10 boastful pots of it hog all the porch blank . Not happening . Heck , it takes two huge bunches just to whip up a batch of kale chips — I would wipe out a container provision in a single afternoon .
Even though my “ pot garden ” is n’t marihuana - found , I still get a bombination from it . The bliss of wintertime horticulture combined with easy accession to herbs and veggies that supply genius to the dinner tabular array is tough to beat .
