So my greens made it through the bad of wintertime ( I go for ) and have really bulge out to kick in grow . They went on hold ( stopped develop ) from around Thanksgiving to mid - January when we had less than 10 60 minutes of daylight . But since then the daylight hours keep increasing daily which is a signaling for the plant life to grow again in devout . In case you are wondering when I institute all this , I implant the carrots , arugula and spinach last September inside the greenhouse , and the red and green lettuces I started from ejaculate under grow lights inside my house on January 2nd and then were put out in the glasshouse in other February .

To keep the super C from freezing   in the dead of winter in the greenhouse which is unheated , I ’ve incubate them with one layer of winter weight course cover every night and on some really cold night ( when temperatures got down to 14 - 17 ° F ) , I put two rows of row back over them . One night the lettuce actually froze . But I read in Elliot Coleman’sWinter Harvest Handbookthat if you do n’t harvest it when it ’s frozen , it may be fine by the afternoon when it warms up and sure enuf , it thawed out and is still growing great . You just ca n’t glean it when it ’s in a frigid DoS .

In the glasshouse are some carrots which are n’t very big yet ( about the size of it of a pencil in circumference ) some immature and red pelf , arugula and spinach , all of which will be harvested before the Green House ( a play on the word greenhouse since my greenhouse was paint green ) gets too hot . In fact when the Clarence Day temperature reach the 50 ’s , I put fans on to blow the heat out of the greenhouse .

Pray for heat , young lady !

You see , I do n’t worry about it being too insensate but worry about it get down too HOT which will have the moolah and prickly-seeded spinach to bolt ( make flowers ) which will do it all to go bitter and then it is only good for our chicken who do n’t seem to mind the bitterness at all . In fact I suppose they beg for the heating system !

look like some of the lettuce and Spinacia oleracea are now bragging enough to pick the out leave while leaving the privileged leaves to continue to mature . And a big bonus for me is to see so much green now already at the starting line of March ! I love cash in one’s chips into the nursery powerful now . Refreshing when the out-of-door flora are still sleeping …
