The Mungo Park ’s aboriginal plant pallette not only distinguishes it from other sculpture parks and garden , but also reflects its quintessential Northwest shoreline environment . “ We absolutely wanted the contrast between the formal component of the park and the constitutional experience of plants , along with diverse setting for the art , ” state Rogers . Hundreds of quaking aspen , massed in a triangular gridiron , create a conniption so sorcerous you ’ll sense you ’ve slipped through the press into Narnia . Anderson ramped up the landscape painting ’s essential characteristic to make just such chroma ; designers went to Idaho for the aspen because they consider those the bright gold of all aspens . ‘ Eddie ’s White Wonder ’ intercrossed dogwoods are engraft en masse up the western slope of the valley , chosen for their large creamy heyday and disease resistance . cracking care was use up with the selection of each and every plant . “ I probably hand - selected 90 percent of the aspens , ” says Rogers .

As befits their setting , plants were point with an creative person ’s eye for mood and linguistic context . The capable , promenade areas encourage sociability and taking in the aspect . The aspen woodlet is all about seasonal change , while the valley floor evokes a mother wit of quiet contemplation . Perhaps most atmospheric is Mark Dion ’s “ Neukom Vivarium , ” where a 55,000 - pounding , 60 - pes nurse log ( i.e. a fallen Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree that act as horde to other plant ) lies shelter by a slim greenhouse with overhead window pane painted unripe to simulate filtered woodland light .
