It is that wonderful metre of year whenthe dahliasare really getting into their stride .

And , if we keep up with thedeadheading , we can have their company until lately into the autumn – unless of class they get buffet down by storms , like some have this week .

I have to be honest when I bring out you to this selection and hold that I have been in a act lax in my horticulture admin , so that I do n’t even know the names of some of thesedahlia varieties .

Dahlia Arbatax

1. Dahlia Arbatax

I do know the name of number 1 on list – Dahlia Arbatax – and it is quickly becoming a favourite . Thisdaintydecorative dahlia open with quite a deep pink tinge to its floweret , but as the flower opens the overall effect is of a faint pink .

2. Dahlia Bishop of Llandaff

Bishop of Lllandaff is paeonyflowerdahlia , intimate to most gardeners . It is qualify by its dark , hunky-dory cutfoliageand its striking red peak – a red that seems to beam so brightly that it is hard to photograph well ( that ’s my exculpation , anyway ) .

3. Semi-Cactus Dahlia

This is the garden Dahlia pinnata that I am most embarrassed to have forget the name of . I cognise that it is a nominate variety show because I buy it at the garden kernel as a package tuber . Unfortunately I mislaid the packaging . I think it may be called Marmalade , or similar . But I ’m pretty indisputable it is n’t Mel ’s Orange Marmalade .

4. Cactus Dahlia 1

The next three varieties get in a sundry coterie of budget tubers from Dobies which was simply tag ‘ Cactus Dahlias ’ . I therefore I have no idea what any of these are call off . This white one is doing well , although , because I had no information on the relative height of theseDahlias when I establish the Tuber , it is too far back in the border and is a hidden behind the mystery ‘ Marmalade ’ dahlia .

5. Cactus Dahlia 2

6. Cactus Dahlia 3

The third of the un - nominate variety is this pollyannaish yellow flowered plant . This probably has the shortest endure flowers of any of this selection and , as it starts to die off , the extinct beam florets start to go a muddy dark-brown colour . This means that you demand todeadheadrather earlier than you do with most dahlia if you require to avoid the mussy look from the browning of the florets .

One advantage of this weeks storm is that some of my Rudbeckias and otherperennialshave been blown down and opened up the borders a bit . It ’s made me realise that this is a good clip to do some editing to make indisputable we get the best out of the former flowering works like thedahlias .
