garden

Each calendar month I take a look at the border as a whole , strain to determine what I wish , what work out , what does n’t , what might necessitate doing . It is April now , of course , but these photos were ( mostly ) taken at the end of March . Let ’s take a spin .

Rear Garden

Article image

View from above . Since taking this exposure , I have removed the slide , it was past it and too small for child the youngest . The wax bod and lilt remain , for now . The ratio of light-green to brown is better with each pass calendar week .

borderline 1 , the patio border . Best described as a workplace in progression . Last month I had start to plant and I ’ve done some more this month . I acquired quite a telephone number of geraniums last fall so those have go in around the edge at various places . The tall asters have blend in in the back along the rampart , I still have more of those to found . There is a longsighted assembly line of alliums middling much following the line of the old border . I think I will move those , spreading them about a fleck . I had better get on with that or I ’ll have to wait until they have flowered and gone over . There face to be plenty of room in here , a good thing as I have lots of young flora come through in the greenhouse and cold frames . bear in mind you , I often make the fault of thinking “ there ’s plenty of elbow room ” at this time of year , forgetting that industrial plant have an annoying yet welcome trend to fill out .

borderline 2 , the gay boundary line . The climbers are all take off . The clematis all seem to be produce by vigorously . go the charge is Mme Julia Correvon in the first picture , behind the cotinus . She was the wizard last year , the only one to top out the fencing and flower profusely . The others are not far behind and I will be drop quite a lot of my weekends tying in for the next calendar month or two . Also doing quite well are the pink wine . Most of them , at any pace . I seem to have lost one of them , not trusted why . Never mind , I will constitute something else there , I have choices . I have an genus Abutilon suntense and some annual climbers vying for a place . I think there are other opportunities for some height in this border . I ’m growing Mexican sunflower again ( although they have n’t germinated yet … ) and also ricinus , both of which get quite tall .

Border 3 , the wisteria boundary line , incorporating the Eye of Sauron . I ’m proud of with this corner . I think it will look peachy in two or three month . The crocus are done , but some daffs and all the tulip are still to come , then there is the perennial planting which is burgeon . I have embed several verbena hastata for some pinnacle , plus of course there is the wisteria itself , climbing roses and clematis which should all provide a squeamish backdrop . Some more geraniums have gone in here too , I see poppy seedling , and the salvia are bulk up nicely . I ’ve also plant some campanula persicifolia , not something I ’ve grow before . I ’m desire they will tone in well with the alliums , perovskia and salvia .

I ’m await forth to sitting in here of an evening , surrounded by plant life and bee , gin and tonic in hand .

Border 4 , the lilac border . I still have n’t planted the genus Ligularia , must get around to that . I am bump them to be very attractive slug - cannon fodder , so I hope I can prevent expiry by crunch . There is a number of spare room in here after the rosemary went , I need to take advantage of that . spate of plants in waiting . The lilac will be out soon , I intend , and the fatsia is still growing away happily in the recession . The vinca which live the further scope of this border is last bananas . I rip it up but it keep come . reckon at this photo I am reminded that the last fence post is waste at the base , cause the trellis to run a minuscule . The proboscis of the long - dead ceanothus is hold it up ! I want to sort that out as well .

Border 5 , the shady boundary line . The photos are a small over exposed , the sun was in the ill-timed place when I took these . The main news is the abelia grandiflora has gone . I ’ve been dysphoric with it for a while , it was n’t earning its keep . I ’ve squirrel away it in a pile for now , I may be able to expend it in the front garden . It leave a middling bit of empty border behind it . I reckon I will have lots of foxgloves this year , so perhaps I can get a decent clump of those proceed . You ’ll note the graphics in the border , an installation even , “ two old balls ” . It really evokes the timeless emotion of , well , indifference in the main . I should bin them , they have clearly been discarded . The bush still me into a false sentience of outer space and light at this fourth dimension of yr , but I call up I can farce in some more under - planting .

Border 6 , the xxx mete . I still have n’t name it . I am waiting to see what is the dominant feature , or perchance just the one I care the good . I am lean hibiscus . As I was writing this I notice that I had forget to take a picture of this border , so it is dull and showery in comparison to the others . Still great deal of empty real estate of the realm in the delimitation , I had well get planting .

Finally , bring up the rear for the rear , the view up the garden , taking in Border 3 , 2 and a bit of 1 .

Side alley

The clematis and roses on the gay side are coming on in leaps and bounds , I think I saw my first rise bud of the yr at the weekend . The shadowy side is look more sparse , but the hosta are poking through , the fern are looking perky and the climbing hydrangea is greening up nicely . There is quite a great deal of distance in the planter , I have other hosta which could go in there plus some shade tolerant geraniums . I should plant them out . A job for the weekend perhaps . In general I ’m somewhat felicitous with the alley , what was a dreary , usable admission path has become part of the garden .

Front garden

Well ! I have been busy in here . The much and right maligned forsythia thicket has been removed . The genus Laburnum tree in the corner has also gone , albeit since these picture were taken . The way is now unclouded for me to put in a fence , up which I will spring up more roses and clematis . The tree surgeon did squash a few things in the outgrowth of removing the tree , but nothing permanently , I hope . The more I think about it , the more I need to revamp the front garden . The piddling flake of lawn is fairly useless and is occupy blank space that would be intimately served by more attractive planting . I have sketch of how I cogitate it will all look . A design is too strong a word , but something to stick to as I comprehend stuff and nonsense up .

That ’s it for this time .

I ’ll be back in a month for another Border Patrol .
