If you want to grow fresh fruit in your yard, consider planting strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, and blackberries.

One of my favorite things to do as a child was to scrounge for wild strawberry , and possibly that ’s why I grow berries today . From June ( strawberry ) through July   and August ( raspberries , black hoot , wineberries , blueberries , currants , elderberries ) , and into September ( blackberries ) , there ’s a steady supply of fruit for snacking , pancakes , desserts , sweet talker , and jam , with enough left over to freeze for the wintertime . Whether you ’re a epicurean cook or a minimalist in the kitchen , you ’ll be ravish by the homegrown look , not to mention the low cost .

Berries are n’t unmanageable to grow , and once established , they want minimum maintenance . There ’s pruning and   pick , of course . Pruning is mostly a tardy wintertime job , and it ’s a good excuse to be outside . Picking berries is   a pleasant action for the intact family ( let in the dog , if you have a Chuck Berry - love pet , as I do ) .

Strawberries may fruit the first class , but it ’s well to piece off the blossoms so the plants can get established . Cane yield ( razz , dark boo , blackberry , and wineberries ) give rise yield in their 2d season . You ’ll have to waitress longer for blueberries and elderberries . After a few years ,   your berry plot of ground will flourish , and you ’ll have plants to portion out with your friend .
